Baseball, post-call, and married life

I don't have much to say about baseball. I used to stop watching baseball when the Braves stop playing with few exceptions, like the BoSox coming back after a three-game deficit to beat the Yankees. Nowadays we have sports on all the time, with my switching over to Project Runway or House on occasion, much to the chagrin of my husband. I will mention that watching the Yankees/Phils series will be like watching the Florida/Tennessee game and trying to figure out who to root for. I still can't stand the Yankees, so go Phils!

I unsuccessfully tried to find a definition of being post-call on the internet. It is a common blog topic, however. As much as call as an attending differs from that of a resident, post-call is also different. I don't wear the same outfit two days in a row. I haven't worn scrubs in about five months. I smell nice when I'm post-call. I also have to work the next day after 1:30pm, no 30-hour rule for me. But as I've mentioned to others, it's been a long time since I've felt tired, which is nice when it used to be a part of daily life. And yet every now and then, I get that foggy-headed feeling and have to ask someone to repeat themselves after I watch them talk for awhile.

Married life is great... as much as I loved being single, I love being married to Tony all the more. Married life fits right in with baseball and post-call too. It's fun to watch a baseball game with Tony and I being our own announcers (we're much better than the Sunday Night Baseball crew, on multiple levels), and my post-call naps have significantly improved now that I can snuggle with him. :)

Encomium

glowing and warmly enthusiastic praise. The word of the day from Merriam-Webster online. I have never used this word before. I have to admit, when I first look at it, I think of the words meconium, euphonium, and encopresis. Meconium and encopresis both have to do with poop; and I played euphonium in high school and at UGA (or tried to).

So in light of the word of the day I have a few shout-outs: first to my ever-loving Heavenly Father, who has known my heart since before I came to be and still calls me to Himself. What an amazing gift of love and grace and I will be forever thankful for Who He is and what He has done for me. Next, to my wonderful husband Tony, I love being able to do life with you and am so glad God made you specifically for me. And lastly, for some of the best people I have ever met who have celebrated their birthdays this month:
  • Karen, my bestest friend ever, who remains as faithful of a friend next to Jesus, and can remember what I looked like with permed hair and braces.
  • Aaron, my second nephew, who is as unique as anyone could be at 14-years old and whose non-conforming journey has yet to unfold.
  • Jill, my friend, my second mom, who is always great for a laugh, a hug, a word of wisdom, a shoulder to cry on, and a Braves game.
  • Josie, my residency mani-pedi and shopping companion, who celebrates her birthday today; I wish I could treat her with one of our outings after clinic, and to a coffee.
I hope this encourages you to give out encomium (and not meconium) to your loved ones today.

Snuggle

to curl up comfortably or cozily; to draw close especially for comfort or in affection; to make snug. From the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Tony and I do this often; we are quite the sickening duo.

Life as newlyweds has been a lot of fun, especially as we get used to each others' idiosyncrasies. We're loving married life! We've decided to join the world of blogging, as life for both of us promises to get busier, and as life for all of us is filled with change.

For a brief update, after we got married in April, we had around 2 1/2 months living apart while I finished residency in Oklahoma City. I joined him in Hinesville, Georgia for a month, then we moved to Columbus, Georgia, which appears to be our stopping point for awhile. Tony is back at Ft. Benning and has an industrial engineering position with a supervisory role. I am practicing with a pretty large multi-specialty group, mostly outpatient clinic with some inpatient work. Very much traditional family medicine minus the obstetrics. We're both getting used to our new jobs and are pretty happy.

Columbus is not quite as big as OKC, and thankfully larger than Hinesville. Everyone says it's a great place to raise children, though we're not there yet! It seems like a nice place for us to start our life together, and neither of us mind the proximity to Atlanta (or Auburn for Tony and Athens for me). We'll post pictures soon... in the meantime, hope everyone is getting to enjoy beautiful fall weather!
